The 119th Nobel Week takes place from 5 to 12 October. The prize is awarded to researchers in the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and for their contribution to the achievement of peace. The Economics Prize will be awarded today, 12 October. This year, the ceremony is being televised in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scientists Michael Houghton, Harvey Alter and Charles Rice have won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology. The award was given for research on the hepatitis C virus. The committee believes that thanks to the work of scientists, the threat from the virus can be eliminated.

Before the discovery of hepatitis C, it was known about the hepatitis A and B viruses and the routes of infection (the A virus is transmitted through water and food, while the B virus is transmitted through the blood).

The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to three scientists for the discovery of the most mysterious phenomenon - a black hole. Rewarded Roger Penrose for the theory that black holes are a prediction of general relativity, Reinhard Genzel, and Andrea Ghez for the discovery of a supermassive object in the center of our galaxy.

Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of genome editing.

Committee members noted that Charpentier and Dudna discovered the CRIPSP / Cas9 genetic scissors gene technology tool in 2012. Through this technology, scientists can alter the DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms. Genetic scissors are contributing to new cancer treatments.

American poet Louise Gluck was awarded the Literature Prize for her unmistakable poetic voice that, through simple beauty, makes individual experience universal.

The main themes of Gluck's poems are childhood, family life, relationships with loved ones. Gluck draws inspiration from myths and classic literature motifs.

The lines from Wild Rice show Gluck's stylistic simplicity:

"At the end of misery
a door appeared.
Listen to me:
what you call death,
I remember.
Rustles from above, swaying branches.
And - failure. Dim sun
flickers over a bare surface.
Scary,
remaining conscious, to be buried in the black earth. "е".

The United Nations World Food Program (abbreviated WFP, abbreviated English WFP) became the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. WFP is the world's largest humanitarian organization.

The Committee noted the efforts to combat hunger, the contribution to improving conditions in disadvantaged regions. WFP also fights against the use of hunger as a weapon in wartime. WFP has shown its ability in the face of the pandemic, when people in countries such as Yemen, South Sudan, Nigeria and others are on the brink of starvation.

The program was created in 1961 to combat hunger and poverty.

The Nobel Prize has been awarded since 1901 by a special committee in Oslo. The awards are awarded to individuals and organizations for outstanding scientific research and discoveries or for those who have contributed to the development of society.
